Technical Director

The most apt description of the Technical Director’s role is producer of the interactive event. He or she is responsible for every aspect of the exchange.

As the TD, your work will begin before the exchange.

You will get a description of the exchange --- typically, a Lesson Plan --- from the TPL Coordinator. Based on this information, you will decide the best type of screen arrangement and camera configuration for the exchange. You will also consult with your counterpart at the Partner Studio to see if you are in sync.

Sometimes, the technical set-up in other studios has been a boon. We have learned from our Partners [One very good example is the quality of audio playback at GCIT/Southern New Jersey Academy of Performing Arts.].
Before the exchange begins, the TD should check out –

• ISDN/satellite hook-up

• Is the hook-up for the exchange working? Usually, a test phone call to the Partner site will be necessary. You can leave the connection [this will cost a few more dollars] or disconnect until the exchange time is nearer.

• viability of all cables in your Studio

• any special requirements such as

• sensitive mikes to capture vocal performance of music
• radio microphones for dialogue in drama [2 or more]
• screen layout

Thinking Outside the Box ...

Does the usual configuration of 2 screens front / 2 screens back contribute to the understanding of performance and its subtleties by your students? We found for example that, as our studios are large, we needed to confine the space for drama. So when student actors read for the first time scripts written by young playwrights, we brought the screens into a tight intimate circle around the acting area This meant that the performer could simultaneously choose which aspect of his partner --- close-up, head shot, long shot --– he wanted to see.

One result of this last experiment can be seen in the movie clip of a cold reading, David & Aurelia ---
