INTERACTIVE EXCHANGE II *

Lesson II
Remember —
in a Coaching Session for Interactive Exchange I,
Diane Aldis & Derek Phillips improvised
& came up with this movement —
Show this phrase — as you interpret it —
to Gloria.
She will analyze the movement
from a Hawkins viewpoint.
Now, make a variation on a different idea —
the "loop of movement" that results from connecting
the undercurve and overcurve.
Here is the phrase —
Undercurve
Overcurve
PC Version
When you set the "center" into motion,
it tends to follow a curving path —
that's undercurve and overcurve. . .
Connected, it's a loop.
Corollary
The arms start to swing into the motion.
Let yourself go a little bit.
It's like drawing in a dark space
with a sparkler, or a flame,
and watching the pathway it creates . . .
Do you discover the loops — ?

Click on this image from Erick Hawkins's Cantilever II.
The link will take you to a snippet of movement from the
Interactive Exchange II of Gloria's Residency at SUNY Brockport.
Do this movement with your whole body.
Identify that loop as a clear, set movement.
* Photographer Phil Druker recently visited the Annapurna summit
& brought home this shot — a frame for Gloria
in Erick Hawkins' piece "Early Floating."
Johan Elbers photographed the dance.
